The holiday resort of La Tranche-sur-Mer is on the Atlantic coast in the south of the Vendée. It faces south towards the Île de Ré, has one of the most favourable climates in the Vendée and with 8 kilometres of fine sandy beaches it is one of the Vendée’s most popular resorts. The traditional low-set houses with white walls and red tiled roofs together with narrow streets give the town a Mediterranean atmosphere. Get lost among the cobbled streets that wind through the village and eventually converge on the main square at its centre.
The village centre is the heart of local life. It is home to the church and its newly renovated forecourt, the market square, the covered market, the Tourist Office and, of course, the narrow, shop-lined, pedestrian streets that lead to the main square. La Tranche-sur-Mer is also a Mecca for water sports, and in particular windsurfers and surfers. Many national and international events are held here especially windsurfing events. For those who enjoy the two wheeled mode of transport, you can explore the area by bicycle on designated cycle paths.
This very popular seaside resort has been an active port for centuries due to the protection afforded it by the Île de Ré. Today the port is more an anchorage for pleasure boats. As one would expect of a popular holiday resort, the needs of the inner man are also well catered for with a varied selection of eateries from crêperies, pizzerias, bistros and restaurants to snack bars and ice cream parlours. The shopping experience is also well covered with shops selling such diverse things from gifts and souvenirs to beach goods and clothes. Apart from the glorious beach, La Tranche has many other attractions which include l'Aunisceane a swimming pool complex, karting, horse riding and the Amusement Park, Le Monde des Enfants - L’Ile aux Pirates.
